The First 24 Hours After Surgery
During the first day after surgery, expect to experience swelling, mild bleeding, and some discomfort around the surgical sites. You’ll likely be given gauze to control bleeding and medication to manage pain. Rest is essential, and you should avoid physical activity and keep your head elevated. Applying ice packs on your cheeks can help reduce swelling.
You’ll need to follow strict guidelines about food and drink. Stick to soft foods like applesauce, pudding, or yogurt, and avoid anything hot, crunchy, or spicy. Don’t use straws, as the suction can dislodge blood clots, which are vital for proper healing.
Days Two to Three
Swelling usually peaks around day two or three. Continue managing discomfort with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief, as directed by your oral surgeon. Gentle saltwater rinses may be recommended to keep your mouth clean and promote healing, but brushing near the surgical site should be done with care.
Your diet can begin to include soft, lukewarm foods like mashed potatoes or scrambled eggs. Hydration is important, but you still need to avoid straws and alcohol.
Week One and Beyond
By the end of the first week, most of the swelling and bruising should subside. Sutures may dissolve on their own or be removed by your provider if needed. You may resume more regular activities, but any strenuous exercise should be cleared by your surgical team.
Full healing can take a few weeks, but if you follow post-op instructions carefully, you’ll reduce the risk of complications like dry socket or infection. Call your provider if you notice worsening pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection.
