TMJ Total Joint Replacement
What is TMJ Total Joint Replacement?
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) total joint replacement is a surgical procedure performed to replace a damaged or diseased TMJ with an artificial joint. This procedure is considered when conservative treatments, such as medications, physical therapy, or dental treatments, have failed to provide relief from TMJ symptoms.
TMJ total joint replacement may be recommended for patients with severe TMJ dysfunction, including:
- Chronic, debilitating pain
- Progressive joint damage
- Difficulty opening or closing the mouth
- Locking or dislocation of the jaw
- Significant functional impairment
The goal of TMJ total joint replacement is to restore jaw function, alleviate pain, and improve quality of life for patients with severe TMJ disease.
The TMJ Total Joint Replacement Procedure
The TMJ total joint replacement procedure typically involves the following steps:
- Anesthesia: The patient is placed under general anesthesia to ensure comfort and minimize pain during the surgery.
- Surgical Approach: The surgeon makes an incision in front of the ear to access the TMJ. The damaged joint components are removed, including the diseased bone and cartilage.
- Implant Placement: The artificial TMJ components are securely placed into position. These components may include a metal fossa component attached to the skull and a metal condylar component attached to the mandible (jawbone).
- Closure: The incision is closed with sutures, and dressings are applied to the surgical site.
After the surgery, patients are closely monitored during the recovery period to ensure proper healing and function of the new TMJ.
Recovery From TMJ Total Joint Replacement
Recovery from TMJ total joint replacement varies for each patient but typically involves:
- Postoperative pain management
- Gradual return to normal activities
- Physical therapy to restore jaw function and mobility
- Regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon to monitor progress and address any concerns
Most patients experience significant improvement in TMJ symptoms and function following total joint replacement.
