Looking our age is something we’re all trying to avoid after our twenties, men and women alike. The main indicators of this are early signs of aging in the face, neck and the skin around the eyes. The older we get, the more our tissues begin to break down, our cells degenerate and over time a small wrinkle here and there, can become many wrinkles. Our face is the champion of our youth. The more animated we are with facial expressions, the more likely we are to develop fine lines and wrinkles.

A facelift (rhytidectomy) can help take care of any loss of volume and laxity within the skin of the face and neck areas; typically a facelift and neck lift are two separate procedures. Tightening of the muscles in the neck helps to reduce the appearance of “turkey neck,” should you need it. Facelift is often combined with fat grafting and laser resurfacing to give every patient the results they desire.

Dr. Elias at Southern California Center for Surgical Arts, takes pride in offering his clients the most natural cosmetic results and makes additional procedure recommendations to supplement what they already have. Our message is to enhance without making these cosmetic procedures look overdone. After all, you are allowed to keep some secrets.

Facelift Surgery Process

Surgery can take anywhere from four to six hours to complete. During the surgery you will be put under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Dr. Elias will make incisions around the hairline, the ears, and close to the temples. These incisions are placed delicately in the natural folds of the face to reduce the appearance of scarring. After the incisions are made, the skin is pulled back, and the underlying tissues are exposed. Underneath the skin are sets of superficial muscles that lose shape and stretch over time. In the next step of the procedure we target these muscles to frame the foundation.

Preparing the Muscle Foundation

During the facelift surgery, these superficial muscles that are referred to as the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) and their respective connective tissues, are pulled up and tightened. The overall effect of this technique in facelift surgery is slightly more invasive than a simple skin facelift, but it’s much more effective. When your surgeon tightens the muscles beneath the skin, this sets a smoother and tighter foundation for the next step in the procedure—skin excision.

Skin Excision and Closure

After the muscles are tightened in the face, the skin is pulled back and any excess remaining will be cut away and repositioned. Should you require any fat removal (liposuction) or fat grafting in these areas to contour the face, chin and neck, this procedure can be added as well. After the muscles are tightened, excess fatty tissues and skin are removed, the incision lines are closed with sutures and skin adhesives.

In addition to the facelift procedure, Dr. Elias will recommend blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), neck lift, chin augmentation, liposuction and forehead lift. In combination with a facelift, these procedures can help clients maintain a youthful appearance with longer lasting results. Over time, these procedures may need a touch-up, depending on the initial condition of the tissues. Laser resurfacing is recommended after the initial healing period is over, to target any remaining fine lines around the eyes and mouth. Ask Dr. Elias about the prospective lifespan of your specific procedure and these additional services during your consultation.

Who is a good candidate for facelift?

A good candidate for facelift surgery is a healthy individual with no medical conditions, who is seeking rejuvenation of their youthful appearance. Facelift is an elective cosmetic surgery and Dr. Elias will walk you through the process in case you have any questions or conditions that could interfere with sedation methods.

How long does recovery take?

To recover completely from facelift surgery, it takes anywhere form ten to fourteen days to see any swelling and redness go down. Cold compresses can be applied to any mild swelling or pain after the surgery. Dr. Elias can also provide pain medication during this time to help with any discomfort.

Your skin may appear tighter during the first part of the healing process as the skin and muscles settle into their new positions, but this is to be expected. During this time we ask that you do not perform any strenuous exercise. Directly after surgery, we ask that you remain in our clinic’s recovery suite for a period of time to relax and to discuss your further home care with Dr. Elias. You may go home the same day after your procedure takes place.

Our clients are always pleased with their natural results and can usually see the positive effects of their facelift in a few days time. Healing does require a short period, but our knowledgeable staff will answer any questions you have and offer any support you may require during this time. Dr. Elias is personally invested in each client, so he will check in on you after your procedure and offer comfort recommendations as needed.
