Our eyes are the looking glass and the skin around the eyes can tell the story of everything we’ve experienced in our lives, from the deep stresses of living to the happiness we’ve experienced. Our eyes also give away our age if we’re not careful and take preventative measures to do so. The problem is that the skin around the eyes, neck, face and décolletage areas are constantly exposed to the sun. The heat provided by UVA and UVB rays contributes to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers; this breakdown of collagen and elastin causes the skin to sag.

With sagging skin around the face and neck, this empty space underneath the muscle underlying the skin can fill with an excess of fatty tissues. These fatty tissues can grow under muscles and pull the skin down further creating this droop in the top eyelid, in the eyebrow area, and the lower lid. This drooping and sagging of the skin can be remedied at Southern California Center for Surgical Arts, under the artistic cosmetic work by Dr. Husam Elias. We offer this surgical procedure to help with the many issues brought on by this drooping of the upper and lower eyelids.

During Blepharoplasty Consultation and Surgery Prep

Prior to any surgical procedures performed, it is important that Dr. Elias have a one on one consultation with you. During this private consultation he will assess the depth of tissue needing to be removed from the eyelid and if you would benefit from blepharoplasty on both the upper and lower lids. This blepharoplasty procedure can be performed on either the upper lid, lower lid, or both at the same time.

The eyelids serve to assist the immune system in keeping out bacteria and other toxins from entering the eyes. The eyes and mouth are two of the main areas where we encounter infection. To promote this decrease in bacteria getting into our system, the eyes must stay lubricated so that they may flush out any impurities and harmful airborne bacteria. If the eyelids continue to droop, not only do they suffer from dryness but they are prone to contracting bacteria. Dry eyes are also uncomfortable and itchy. Dr. Elias can help you remove this discomfort by cutting out this extra skin, fatty tissue and weak muscle around the eyes.

To prepare for blepharoplasty surgery, Dr. Elias recommends that no aspirin be taken at least two weeks prior to the surgery. Should you require any other medication to reduce the chance of swelling beforehand, Dr. Elias will discuss this with you. There are no other preparations to be made before surgery; however, we recommend that someone drop you off and drive you home.

Benefits of Blepharoplasty:

  • Reduced dryness in the eyes
  • Lessens the signs of aging
  • Reduces puffiness around the eyes
  • Promotes immunity
  • Boosts confidence
  • Quick surgery

What happens during blepharoplasty surgery?

During the blepharoplasty surgery, Dr. Elias places each client under general anesthesia or IV sedation depending on your medical history and preference. Your eyes will be protected with contact lenses before any incisions are made. The area around the eyes is numb and the doctor will begin drawing reference lines just underneath or above (in the upper lid) the lash line, to make sure the incisions are made in the best possible position for concealment.

Once these preparatory lines are drawn, Dr. Elias will cut into the skin and the underlying muscle layer to expose these pockets of fat needing to be removed. The doctor will extract these fatty deposits, then tighten the muscle superior to the fatty layers. Prior to closing these incisions, any sagging skin will be removed to decrease bags under the eyes. Incisions in the eyelid will be closed with dissolvable stitches. Blepharoplasty surgery can take up to two hours to perform.

Results and Recovery

After blepharoplasty surgery is performed, there may be some slight redness and swelling around the eyes. These side effects are mild and should decrease over the next few days. Should you have any non-dissolving stitches placed, Dr. Elias will remove them in a week’s time.

You will see the difference in the look of the skin around the eye almost immediately after surgery has taken place. Dr. Elias will recommend having both upper and lower lid blepharoplasty if puffiness and sagging around the eye is significant for optimal results. This surgery can enhance any previous facelift or neck lift surgery and can make you look years younger.

Depending on your cosmetic needs, Dr. Elias can perform multiple procedures that help to liven up the face and take in any sagging skin. At Southern California Center for Surgical Arts, we provide the best patient care and natural results for every one of our clients. If you want to look your best, start with your eyes.
