What To Know Before Your First Visit

plastic surgery candidate

Whenever you decide to pop into your surgeon’s office for a consultation, there is probably a list of things you’ll need to bring with you to make sure you and your surgeon share the right information with one another. Every piece of information counts and these are the keys to success when consulting so that Dr. Elias has all the information he needs to determine whether the surgery is the right one. When you set up your appointment for a consultation with Dr. Elias at Southern California Center for Surgical Arts, we will tell you which items to bring so that you’re fully prepared.

While these pieces of information are helpful to determine the fit of the surgery, they also allow you to better prepare with any questions you might have for Dr. Elias. To start, we like for every patient to bring in a list of their current medications and any X-rays taken by referring physicians. Any reconstructive surgeries with a particular medical history are best performed with all information ready to go.

The questions you have are addressed during your first meeting with Dr. Elias, and we encourage you to bring them, so you feel ready to move forward with surgery. We are only as successful as your experience from the first moment you walk in until your procedure is complete. We also want you to know that you have the opportunity to check out all of our before and after photos, so you know what to expect.

Recap of what to bring with you on your first visit:

  • List of your most current medications
  • Copy of your insurance information
  • List of questions you have for Dr. Elias
  • Referral slip and any previous radiographs, CT scans or MRI if needed

Am I a candidate for surgery?

One of the most common questions that we have and address is whether or not you will be the best candidate for the surgery. As long as you are healthy and a nonsmoker without prior conditions that could affect the outcome of the surgery, you’re a great fit! Certain procedures do have requirements such as those for liposuction since we encourage patients to have tried healthy weight loss before looking into fat reduction. For a surgery like this, if we remove excess fat from the body it doesn’t mean you cannot gain the weight back. Liposuction requires that you make a lifestyle change to keep the weight off and it’s important that we don’t offer you a surgery that will have risks if it’s not necessary.

What lifestyle changes will I need to make?

We want you to achieve the results you want from your surgical procedures, and that means only offering you the right surgery for your lifestyle. As mentioned before, we like to make sure that clients are paired accurately with their surgical procedures and that we don’t perform an unnecessary surgery or that we do it at the right time. Liposuction candidates are encouraged to make a lifestyle change such as committing to a healthier diet with daily exercise to maintain a healthy weight or be quite close to the reduced weight they’re hoping to achieve.

Any facelift procedure will not last as long as you expect unless you stop smoking. Smoking isn’t the best thing for your skin and will cause increased aging even after you’ve asked for a surgical lift and tightening of the skin. Being realistic about what is possible and the lifespan on a procedure is important, but that begins with your lifestyle. So make these decisions with care, and we can help with the rest.

Perfecting the Art of Your Nose

Depending on where you come from, there are variations in the perfect nose shape. Noses are a space for artistic creation that Dr. Husam Elias spends much of his time working with at Southern California Center for Surgical Arts. We remember the Greeks and their mathematical proportions to the face and body, especially the nose with its angular shapely ideal.

Of course, a lot of time has gone by since the Greeks pointed out their evidence based on symmetry with the nose and the internet has increased the availability for cultural exchange. Now, we can emulsify everything we see in popular culture, ethnic culture and patients’ personal tastes. Variety is everything with rhinoplasty, and we can help you in perfecting the art of your nose at SCCSA.

Why Rhinoplasties Can be Great for Proportioning Out Your Face

We see it every day, someone standing in front of the mirror crinkling their nose or pushing their nostrils in or the tip of their nose upward to see how it would look. Rhinoplasty is popular because it allows you to get the look that you want and the added ability to proportion the natural contours of your face. The rhinoplasty will allow you to do many things to your nose if you don’t like the way it looks now. We can change the width of the nostrils, the angle of the nostrils, shaping the tip, the overall shape of your nose (bumps in the bridge) and any spacing from the top lip.

Changing the size of the nose can enhance your eyes and lashes, make the lips look fuller, and narrow the face. The rhinoplasty provides a buffer in optical illusion if you want to modify or enhance a specific area of the face, Dr. Elias will work with you to draw out a surgical plan. Before you get started with the procedure, we will help you look through every before and after photo we have to give you an idea of what we mean. But how do we proportion your facial features?

The Face in Thirds

There are a few ways you can measure the face to make sure that your new expected styling for your nose complements other facial virtues, so you get the most out of your procedure. As far as proportions go, the face is broken down into three areas—the upper third of the face, the midsection, and the lower third. Those nose should stay within the borders in this mid-section, which we will draw out for you. Again, while we want to proportion out what you have, we want to stress uniqueness throughout the process. Beauty is in the eye of the individual, and we want to capture that at SCCSA.

Your nose will reflect your own personal style and the artistic vision of Dr. Husam Elias which means you will be pleased and so much more with your results. Bring in all of your favorite examples to your consultation and Dr. Elias will work through a surgical plan that incorporates everything you hope to see with respect to proportions and your features. How a Rhinoplasty Works and How It Can Change Your Life

A clever name for an amazing procedure, the rhinoplasty is a game changer for everyone out there. At Southern California Center for Surgical Arts, we’ve seen our patients transform as soon as the surgery is done because this surgery completely modifies facial dimensions to reveal an aligned, proportioned and beautifully crafted nose. Dr. Husam Elias is at the top of the list with rhinoplasties in Southern California, where the stars live, and finds inspiration everywhere to help his patients create custom rhinoplasty plans so that they can stop worrying about the look of their nose and start living.

At the center of the face, the nose dominates, and that’s what bothers many people when they have issues such as a bump on the bridge of the nose, downturned tip, enlarges nostrils, etc. We never advocate for a particular ideal at SCCSA, but we encourage our patients to find their own inspiration for rhinoplasty and bring those ideas in with them. During the consultation for rhinoplasty, we go through all the necessary steps of the procedure and find out the real reason behind your desire for surgery. This procedure is meant to help people boost their confidence and to help with any breathing conditions caused by the structure of the nose; it’s important that each patient is realistic and understands everything from pre to post-op steps. Dr. Elias listens to all patients and gets to know their lifestyle, dreams, and goals before performing any surgery so we can make sure we offer each patient the best result that aligns with medical advice and style.

What does the rhinoplasty procedure do?

The rhinoplasty is a detailed nose surgery that fixes all abnormalities with the nose such as position, shape, dimensional balance and overall beauty. We can alter a nose that is disproportionate with all features of the face, tighten the nostril width, change the length and width of the bridge, remove any bumps on the bridge and modify the tip of the nose. During the procedure, Dr. Elias can perform an open or closed rhinoplasty depending on how much modification is required. During your consultation, you will discuss which approach is best.

As he modifies the dimensions of every part of the nose, he can additionally shave away excess cartilage and skin that causes these unpleasant proportions or adds more cartilage implants that can be taken from the ear should you like to enhance a particular part of the nose. The whole of the surgery can be done with interior stitching to tether the bridge of the nose and tighten like a drawstring as well as bring in the nostrils to minimize any chance of scarring. This procedure is about making your wishes come true with nose modification because we know you want to love the way you look.

How can a rhinoplasty help with self-confidence?

Rhinoplasty can change everything for some patients, and we understand that this surgery has that power, so we work to make sure every part of our rhinoplasty aligns with your dream look. Before rhinoplasty, patients have said that they shy away from photos and often try to cover up their face by wearing their hair down and swept over or just staying home altogether. This is heartbreaking because everyone is beautiful and deserves to enjoy their life. Whatever bothers you about your nose can be altered by Dr. Elias; we’ve seen clients open up and reveal their full personality as soon as they remove their bandages. You won’t have to hide anymore after rhinoplasty, and your self-confidence will shine through. Some people say they look entirely different, and people are surprised by their transformation. Part of this transformation happens on your face; the other is deep inside you.

What to Expect During Rhinoplasty Recovery

Choosing to get a nose job (medically known as a rhinoplasty) is a sensitive decision, one which affects the focal point of your face. Though patients are typically very pleased with their surgical results, many are unaware that the recovery time for a nose job is lengthier than you might expect. Because it is such a delicate surgery, it is important to follow recovery instructions very carefully to ensure your best results.

Every nose is different, and every nose job is even more unique. Therefore, it is important to consult with your surgeon regarding your specific recovery tips. Dr. Elias of the Southern California Center for Surgical Arts is not only known in Los Angeles for being a rhinoplasty artist, but also for the care he takes of his patients. When you schedule your consultation with Dr. Elias, he will be sure to give you care instructions that are specific to your medical history and the specifics of your surgery. You will also be able to contact him after your operation if you experience any complications with your recovery. When you choose the Southern California Center for Surgical Arts, you choose family.

The Recovery Timeline

Your full recovery from a nose job takes up to 8 weeks, that is for all of your swelling to subside and the complete results of your surgery to appear and set in. Most patients report that recovery is not painful, but may be uncomfortable and unattractive. Breathing through your mouth for several weeks and covering up swelling and bruising may be an inconvenience, but once recovery is complete, you can enjoy the benefits of renewed confidence and facial balance.

Following your procedure, a cast must be worn on your nose for 5-7 days, or until your follow-up appointment with Dr. Elias. After the cast is removed, you will still see some swelling. We recommend you take one week of rest from work and other activities, allowing your body to fully rest and commit to recovery. You will look presentable one to two weeks following surgery, but mild swelling will still affect the way your results will look several months later.

Medication and Aftercare

Dr. Elias will likely prescribe you medication for significant pain that may occur the first few days after surgery. Most of our patients are able to switch to an over-the-counter pain reliever like Tylenol within two days of the procedure. We highly recommend avoiding taking prescription medication if you can, or if your pain is manageable with mild medication. However, ‘dealing’ with the pain without any medication may set back your recovery, as your body’s focus is taken away from the healing when it is focused on pain and when swelling may be disrupting the healing process.

Physical Activity Do’s and Don’ts

While we know you Los Angeles locals are busybodies, it is so important to find time to recover after your rhinoplasty. That means complete rest for at least one week and avoiding strenuous physical activity for at least two weeks. Exercise increases blood pressure and sends blood flow to your arms and legs, drawing it away from the site of the wound. Heightened blood pressure may cause excess bleeding in the wound and may cause you to become nauseous. For this reason, you should let your body properly heal and rest, without risking optimal results from your surgery.

If you are self-conscious about the shape of your nose or your facial proportion, a rhinoplasty may be a procedure to consider. Dr. Elias is known in Los Angeles for incredible results and quality care.
